Australia Supports Sustainable Transport Solutions in Bali

The handover was held as part of a ceremony at Wiswa Sabha Utama, at the Bali Governor’s Office, on 16 December 2024.

Australia and KIAT have partnered with the Bali Provincial Government to enhance sustainable and safe public transport. As part of this collaboration, Australia’s Consul-General in Bali, Jo Stevens, officially handed over to then Acting Governor of Bali, Sang Made Mahendra Jaya, the feasibility study for an Electric Bus Rapid Transit (eBRT) system covering the Denpasar metropolitan area (known as Sarbagita), as well as a Mobility Plan for the Ubud metropolitan area. The handover was held as part of a ceremony at Wiswa Sabha Utama, at the Bali Governor’s Office, on 16 December 2024. The event was attended by representatives from Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan districts from the Sarbagita metropolitan area.

The 2 studies offer roadmaps for improving public transport connectivity, reducing congestion and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Mahendra Jaya highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive transport reforms, noting the growing reliance on private vehicles, poor pedestrian infrastructure, and limited public transport coverage. He noted that without immediate action, Bali risks economic losses, inefficient energy use and declining tourism competitiveness. He emphasised that improving mobility in the Sarbagita metropolitan area requires a collaborative, cross-sectoral approach.

The eBRT feasibility study and Ulapan Mobility Plan mark a significant step towards a more efficient, accessible and environmentally friendly transport system, aligning with Bali’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2045.
