Panelists of "Breaking Barriers: Women's Leadership in Science and Research" to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), through the Knowledge Partnership (KONEKSI)

20 February 2024 - The Australian Embassy in Jakarta hosted a panel discussion titled "Breaking Barriers: Women's Leadership in Science and Research" to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), through the Knowledge Partnership (KONEKSI).

The event, held by the Knowledge Partnership (KONEKSI) and co-hosted by the Indonesia Australia Partnership for Infrastructure (KIAT) and Australia Awards Indonesia, highlighted the importance of encouraging women's participation and leadership in STEM through collaborative efforts to address gender gaps.

Opening the event, Deputy Chief of Mission Steve Scott highlighted the impact of women leaders in STEM as visible role models for women and girls, "because we can't be what we can't see."

Deputy Chief of Mission Scott further highlighted that low female participation in STEM can result in knowledge gaps, as well as low levels of research and innovation capabilities.

Panel speakers included Dr Janin Bredehoeft, CEO of Science in Australia Gender Equality (SAGE), Ir. Suharti, Secretary General of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Cindy Priadi, Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Program, University of Indonesia, and Professor Corina Riantoputra from the KIAT program.

KONEKSI is a collaborative initiative in the research and innovation sector that supports partnerships between Australian and Indonesian organisations for inclusive and sustainable policies and technologies. Supported by the Australian and Indonesian Governments, the program encourages equitable research partnerships between Australian and Indonesian institutions to address socio-economic challenges.
